Good press-ons are less about brute-force glue and more about fit, preparation and applying them properly.
1. Sizing is the foundation
Each press-on should cover the nail plate from sidewall to sidewall without sitting on the skin. A nail that is too small can feel tight and lift at the edges; one that is too large may overlap the skin and look bulky.
2. Prep matters more than people think
Start with clean, dry nails. Gently push back the cuticles, remove surface oils and lightly buff only if the instructions for your chosen adhesive recommend it. Avoid creams or oils immediately before application because they can reduce adhesion.
3. Tabs versus glue
Adhesive tabs are useful when you want shorter wear or easier removal. Nail glue is typically chosen for longer wear. Whichever you use, follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions rather than simply adding more product.
4. Application
Line the press-on up near the cuticle without touching the skin, lower it onto the natural nail and apply firm, even pressure. Taking a little longer over each nail usually gives a cleaner result than rushing through the set.
5. Removal should not hurt
Don't force or rip press-ons from the natural nail. Follow the removal instructions for your adhesive and give the product time to release. If a nail is resisting, stop and continue soaking or loosening rather than pulling harder.
6. Reuse depends on the set
Some handmade press-ons can be reused if they're removed carefully and the underside can be cleaned without damaging the design. We'll publish specific care instructions for Alternative Nails sets before the shop opens.
